Artist Statement for Peter Heuscher

Painting for me is another dimension of language.
And it is a passion - a creative process that allows a more active perception of the world and accentuates empathy. A form of communication, where an image or a part of it can say far more, more profoundly and more rapidly, than it would be possible with words.
We look at flowers, smell the fragrance and enjoy them - but there is a lot more to explore.
The journey into the details of their creation let us be aware of a very special order in creation which makes flowers so beautiful and sometimes even evoke sensual feelings.
The concept of making people’s emotions and longings the focus of my paintings and seeking what can hardly be expressed in by words, fascinates me.
The series “Inner Beauty” starts with digital photo macros (because they would not survive the painting process), the search for the details of their inner beauty and then brought to canvas.
The series of “Hinterland” and “Together” startet with impressions from travelling trough the Noosa hinterland. The soft hills of the countryside with its beautiful dams, loosely forested areas and specially the trees which had a long and hard life until fire or draught made them “hinterland icons” created the intense feeling to shape the content.
There always is a plan to begin with, but during the process I was quickly directed by the work, answering the needs and discovering solutions.
So the content of most of my paintings is shaped in this way.
Sharing experiences, knowledge, impressions and ideas, interaction with human beings is most essential for me.
In a search to paint the “sharing way”, I have opened my painting process to the influence of others as well. This may seem a contradiction but this duality more completely represents who I am and what I believe is most important in life.
So the content of most of my paintings is shaped in this way.
For landscapes and seascapes, I initially use scetches, ideas, pictures and photographs from the various trips to some of Australias most beautiful places (including Queensland and the Sunshine Coast).
Portraits of Flowers (Frangipanies, Waterlillies or Lotus in ponds) start normally with digital photo macros and/or scetches and the search for the “inner beauty” (because most of the flowers would not survive the painting process) and then brought to the canvas.
Abstracts mostly start with a intense feeling to shape the content. There is of course the seed of a plan to begin with, but I am quickly directed by the work, answering the needs, sorting the puzzles and discovering solutions.
My paintings are mostly done in oil with brushes and palette-knives, sometimes also in combination with acrylic and other media.
In the end, if I am excited about the result – I am “ready to share”.
