I paint excepts of everyday living, because in my mind, there is such a depth to even the most simple surroundings we live and exist in. I am drawn by the deceiving simplicity of ordinary living, and the aggregate beauty of the complexities of this ordinary life...in both happy, mundane, and painful experiences, be it socially or personally. My artwork is my record of the times we live in, from the view of "one in a sea of faces."
I am fascinated by sea both metaphorically and physically. I use it consisently as a source of inspiration, but also as a source of subject matter. The ocean occupies a place in my soul; sparkling, complex, vast, complete and eternal, it has it's multitudes of colors and hues, deep secretive recesses, and glorious teeming shallows. I try to reflect all of these facets that parallel life into my artwork.
In terms of artistic influences, I have always admired the Impressionists and Post Impressionist movements, with their free use of color and texture to express light and also to express their passion for the subject they were working on.
My work captures my "impression," my slant of the subject or situation. I strive to capture that moment in time, with the color, light and temperature I have interprated to symbolize that moment. My goal is always to capture a fleeting glimpse, a moment in time, a quick yet thorough contemplation. I like the viewer to be involved in that moment, to finish the moment in their own mind.
I also admire Post-Impressionist Modernism in that I agree color and line quality must be expressive, and that an artist's power to determine their palette (hues and tonal ranges)are a seminal element of creativity. I keep all of these ideals in my mind when I create, and with this, and my own spark and interpretations, I express joy, ambiguity, angst, nostalgia...whatever touches me about the subject I am working on.
Ultimately, I seek to bring an idea of healing, a sense of commonality and acceptance for us at an individual level, to the forefront of my work. We all share the same common bond of our humanity, and many of the same experiences, that cross all cultural boundaries, and this is the end result I look to accomplish when I create new artwork.
