Artist Statement for Hilda Joyce

And God created man in His own image. Trying to duplicate that image in charcoal brings to me a taste of ecstasy too puny as even to compare. In attempting to copy man's image, it is like peering at His reflection in a mirror so poor, for all I see while doing so is hazy and blurred.
With the turn of the millennium at age 62, I discovered a love, and through self-teaching, a talent for the capturing of faces--faces especially of my people of color in a medium that lends itself so incredibly well to the wonderful shades of blackness.
