Artist Statement:
Funky. Lyrical. Poetic. Vibrant. Colorful. Sophisticated. Reverential. The art of SKIP HILL is a savory mojo gumbo of artistic and cultural influences gleaned at the apron strings of Romare Bearden, Picasso, and Van Gogh. Patterns, images and forms drawn from Negro folk art, Japanese Ukiyo prints, Russian Icons, the Italian Renaissance and tribal textiles and tattoos are tossed into the mix.
Skip Hill is cooking with color, mixing methods, exploring, tasting, erasing, adding seasonings of Art History and healthy doses of Soul. He is creating paintings that are a visual mishmash of Pad-Thai and collard greens sprinkled with Jesus. His work is a two dimensional cacophony of classical music-karaoke-Jazz and Neo-Afro Baroque .
"PAINTING IS SACRED PLAY and ritual for me, as much as dance, worship, music or cooking a paella in it's process. The process calls me to be open to Intuition, Divine guidance, Memory and the gifts that flavor my painting practice. Long story short, this is where the bread of my blessings are.
