Artist’s Statement
I believe serendipity is as valid an influence as intent. While working with intent, I also like to be spontaneous and let the images from every day life, myths, and spirituality guide me.
As an Artist working with clay, I find that the many transformations it can go through are mesmerizing. I work in both a concept-based and traditional form of art. You may find some printmaking techniques and added embellishments such as metal hardware, slip-cast organic material, and wet clay installations. I incorporate these materials to challenge the viewer and to push the limits of the pottery tradition.
Ideas of transformation, magic, and spirituality interest me. The transformation of clay, on the wheel and off, can embody all of these themes. I wheel-throw and hand-build both functional and non-functional ceramics, firing to cone six and some of my non-functional pieces I fire using an ancient Japanese technique called Raku. Using fire and smoke, I can see what seems to be a magical transformation of the piece.
