Artist Statement for Laurie Freeman

My body of work has been criticised as being too diverse in object and idea for the audience to get a clear idea of my artistic identity. My response to that comment: that is who I am as an artist. I paint to examine colour and form; I photograph to capture memory and reference; I draw for the sheer freedom of it; I sculpted to produce objects to exist with me; I use collage to create new narratives through disparate images; I read art history, theory and philosophy for the interest but also because how can one know where to take one’s art, if one doesn’t know where it’s been. Everything is a point of departure and experimentation.
Not surprisingly, my grandmother taught me cross stitch and started the bug. These works are a response to the two extremes of the male gaze and the perception of women which has been a subject for generations of artists. Historically embroidery was an craft for lady's of leisure, particularly the wealthy and represented the piousness and innocence of women. When suitors came it was auspicious to be 'caught' doing embroidery. It was also a community for women to socialise. Historically pornography was also a leisure activity for the rich as nude women in photographs were the subject of male gaze and where poses were influenced by life painting. The poses reflected the influence of painting and the Academie and today in magazines such as Playboy, Hustler and Penthouse, the same approach is evident. I use these images for a point of departure and meld them with cross stitch, paring down the content to focus simply on the two aspects. The embroidery brings the erotic nature of the images to a more innocent level and you begin to see the connection of both activities have historically in social and artistic realms.
I am currently working on cross stitching these images to blue jeans pockets. If you are interested please contact me... hoyajeda@yahoo.com. all work is one of a kind.
