Artist Statement for Hui Ling Lee
Young contemporary artist LEE Hui Ling re-imagines the industrial, gritty and sophisticated urban landscapes of New York City in her latest series of artwork “New York City Psychedelia & Hip Hopster”. As one of the most intimidating cities in the world, the Big Apple is tamed through a vibrant palette that not only shouts joie de vie, but also feelings of playfulness, innocence, escapism, romance and a passion for colours.
Hui Ling’s artistic inspirations include her parents’ incredible portfolio of artwork, Giorgio Morandi, Milton Glaser, Andy Warhol and Josef Sudek. With her latest series, she is keen to spread good vibrations all around and to encourage a fun, easy-going relationship with art. Visceral rather than cerebral, New York City Psychedelia & Hip Hopster appeals to the senses as opposed to the intellect in a relentless and unabashed pursuit of the picturesque.
The Hip Hopster series mark the beginnings of Hui Ling’s exploration into the artistic and physical capabilities of the human body through a unique music and dance genre: hip hop and break dance. This fascination and appreciation for the human body is as old as humanity itself. Thus, Hip Hopster celebrates the grace, beauty, athletism and duende of hip hop music and break dance as a global cultural phenomenon since its humble beginnings in Jamaica and New York City way back in the 1920s.
