Artist Statement for Jo. Hurst
|
|
|
Jo. Hurst has had a dual career of professional sculptor and research
scientist for the past 30 years. Formal training in art was obtained in high school, college, at the New School for Social Research and the Art Students
League in New York, and with various professional sculptors. Her work has
been shown at various academic exhibits, the DeLigny Gallery in Fort
Lauderdale, for Art’s Sake gallery in Dania, the Beresford Gallery in West
Palm Beach, the Jockey Club in Miami, and in several gallery-shops in the
Bahamas. Her work is held by a number of private collectors. She has
managed several exhibitions of equestrian art at the Royal Palm Polo Club in Boca Raton. She formed a corporation “Equestrianarts, Inc.” in 1981 to manage and sell her art orks. She has received a number of awards for her sculptings and has completed several commissioned works. She has been a member of art associations in Ft. Lauderdale and continues to exhibit at their shows. For the past 5 years, she has devoted full time to sculpting and shares Henri Moretti’s studio in Oakland Park. She is one of the founding members and on the Board of Directors of the New River Fine Artist's Association, Inc.
She tries to capture lines of motion in human, animal and abstract forms.
She continues to experiment with new materials and techniques to achieve this
goal. She has also become fluent with some computer graphics software in
order to experiment with new digital art forms.

She obtained her Ph.D. in Physiology/Hematology at St. John's University in New York. Her scientific background consists mainly of basic research in oncology/hematology and teaching at the graduate and post graduate level.
She was Director of Research and Education at the Goodwin Institute for
Cancer Research, Associate Professor at St. John’s University Graduate
School of Arts and Science, Visiting Professor at the University of Bristol
School of Medicine, visiting researcher at the Patterson Laboratories-Holt
Radiation Lab., Manchester, and Consultant-Laboratory Chief for
Biotherapeutics, Inc., the Cancer Diagnostic Laboratory at North Ridge
General Hospital, Brookhaven National Laboratories, Department of
Medicine, New York Ocean Science Laboratory, Division of Marine Derived
Anti-Cancer Drugs, and Univ. of Alabama, School of Medicine. She has
received numerous research grants and written more than 20 research papers
and book chapters.
