Unconventional landscapes
By Ann Nichols Arts Writer
Stephen Parker’s slogan is "Now this is art!"
The Southeastern artist has been a creative
director and designer in Atlanta since 1992
but decided last year to pursue a painting career.
"If I were going to start a new career, I wanted
it to be something I really liked doing — which
is painting," he said. "I knew this was something
I could do for the rest of my life, but I needed
some new creative approach that would distinguish
me from anyone else." Mr. Parker’s desire to be
unique led him to create multiple-panel, mixed
media abstract interpretations of landscapes,
skies, clouds, water and reflections. An exhibit
of his work is on display at Bill Shores Frames
& Gallery through July 29.
Purchasing a digital camera and experimenting
with various photography techniques aided Mr.
Parker in manipulating scenery and abstracting
his images. He also imposes his own color palette
on his subjects. With images of stormy skies,
brilliant sunsets, cloud formations and interactions
between sky and water in hand, he was ready to
"present" his ideas in an unconventional fashion.
Painting on a large piece of canvas, he cut areas
out of the canvas and placed them over stretcher
bars in the gallery wrap style. The gallery wrap
is a painted edge format that doesn’t require a
conventional frame for hanging. Mr. Parker also
adds sheets of clear acrylic to the front of the
composition to further change the texture and
appearance of the surface. Finally, he combines
several canvases that relate to each other into
the same composition. His constructions range from
2 feet up to 8 feet in size."Recently, I began
cutting some of the canvases so that the wall
behind the painting could be seen through the
composition," he said. Mr. Parker received a
Bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and a
Master’s degree from Georgia Tech. He credits
his classes in design, theoretical architecture
and advanced computer modeling techniques with
giving him the background to "do something really
new in art." Bill Shores Frames & Gallery, 11 E.
Seventh St., is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday. For information, call 756-6746.
