Artist Statement:
Sculpture
A Statement of Values
The form is suggested by the stone. The finished sculpture is hidden in the irregular guise of raw rock, waiting to be released; first by the imagination, then by the hammer and chisel. An artist sees the shape; his hand cuts the stone to release that shape. This is the essence of the direct approach in rock sculpture.
Each of my sculptures is a unique exploration. After surveying acres of rock I select the few pieces that have stirred something inside me. I then observe the color and texture of the stone as sunlight probes the intricacies of the natural surface. I like to give the forms time to mature before I commit my hand.
Modern sculpture has seen the ascendancy of a wide variety of mediums; clay, wood, bronze, plaster, terra-cotta and resin molding. I have chose to work primarily with marble because of its unusual warmth, multiple layers of color, and resilience. I seek a sea polished texture, alive with harmony and freed form.
I like to think that my finished work is a fusion of millions of years and thousands of hammer blows.
