Artist Statement for Karen Isailovic

I feel better when I paint. Period. We all have choices. If I reach the point when I know what I'm trying to say with my work, should it ever be clarified, I'll let you know. There's so much to express yet so little time to express it in.

At this time I am painting for the pure experience. Every time I put a brush in my hand I am learning, which is extremely satisfying. I am also ON THE VERGE of painting to expose whatever it is that needs to come out. I feel that need right now. This is sometimes expressed in an abstract manner, at others it is expressed in my choosing of something familiar through landscape, objects, figures or certain shapes and colors that draw me in.

When I paint it feels like I am free falling, an absolute dare and contradiction in my belief in what I can do, but like magic it works - for me.

I guess the icing on the cake will be if anyone is interested in what I'm about - what is excavated naturally.
~October 2004
