Artist Statement:
My years of living in Cuba exerted a vital influence on my art. One of the good things that arose out of having studied arts there was that the scarcity of standard art supplies forced me to learn how to research materials and to use every means available in order to express my art. I developed an eagerness to try every material on which I could lay my hands: from polyethylene to supermarket bags, from Japanese rice paper to homemade paper, from interfacing fabric to jute, from construction materials to packing paper and foam and even computer chips and cards. I reject using the conventional brush and easel to do my paintings. I prefer to use my bare hands to mix and apply the materials on the support of my choosing. Sometimes I use a spatula or other instrument to render the texture I desire. And textures are very important to me. Some of my early works were not only to please the eyes but also the hands. I wanted to transmit the sensations I felt when I was doing those specific works.
