Artist Statement for Joseph Brown

My journey as an artist began when I was three months old and a crayon fell into my crib; I immediately created a masterpiece on my blanket, which now hangs in the local art museum... or maybe not! I won’t bore you with the story of my life. My artist statement is really very simple, I love art, both creating and appreciating it.

I have been an “artist” as long as I can remember. My career started in freelance cartooning; an area I found suited my personality and abilities. I was successful in this endeavor becoming one of the top freelance cartoonists in the country. I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and books with clients ranging from The Saturday Evening Post, Aquarium Fish, Industry Week, Habitat for Humanity, UNICEF International, University of Notre Dame, and New Hampshire Public Radio, to name a few.

I eventually decided to make a go at “finer” art and found a love for pastel painting. My work has developed into what has been defined as “imaginative realism”.

My goal is to give people a sense of “goodness”, to create a place that’s somewhere you’d want to visit or that reminds you of a place or time you have already experienced. The world can be harsh and to counter the assault on our senses from crime, violence, bigotry and hate I create places that are wholesome and safe. The world from which Joe Brown’s art emerges is one of all things good!
