Artist Statement for Jack Slomovits

JACKSLOMOVITS
(b. USA, 1969) Raised in Los Angeles, Jack Slomovits picked up his first camera at the age of six, an Eastman Kodak “Brownie.” Throughout high school and college, he won fine art, photography and filmmaking awards and a scholarship to study at Parsons (Los Angeles). By 1991 he was developing his unique photographic eye and moved to New York City to study photography at Fordham University, Lincoln Center in an independent study program. He learned the “trade” while working at a major New York film lab where he was exposed to the work of other artists in the medium.
Growing up in the 80’s and maturing sexually in an age of AIDS, Jack’s lust for adventure was tempered by his fear and awareness of the disease. He experimented as far as his own boundaries for safe play would allow, and became conscious both sexually and creatively of how much fantasy dictates the reality of eroticism. By merging his sexual energy as a young man and his art, the camera replaced the condom and has become his wand of control.
Jack Slomovits is a Commercial Photographer and Graphic Artist. His commercial images are in print ads and trade-publications internationally. In 1998, Slomovits expanded his photographic endeavors into documenting weddings in his own signature style; Candid, Raw and Moving. In 1999, along with his partner, he started a design and internet company called BLOWSQUISH, together they combine artistic simplicity with up-to-date marketing strategies to create successful advertising platforms in print (as seen in Modern Bride, Locations, Time Out New York and HX Magazine) and on the internet for their clients.
Jack Slomovits' brings an element of spontaneity and surprise to his photographs. Specializing in photojournalistic imagery with an editorial flavor, this photographer is for those who appreciate something different and unique, “We’re trying to tell a story here.” No dull line-up poses here, "You're not in Kansas anymore..." Slomovits is a visual artist and commercial photographer who is exhibited in art galleries across the country and published internationally.
Slomovits' newest direction is a focus in 60’s and 70’s style. The minimalism and pattern-driven flare of decades past is emerging in his newest photographic portraits and also in his graphic design endeavors. The goal is to create a new collection of sensually charged images blending his own style of stark, raw portraiture with the designs and appeal of history.
His work is in the permanent collection of the Leslie-Lohman Art Foundation in New York. He has appeared in person on The Malignant Muse (Cable Program) and his work has been featured on Velvet Mafia, Outsider Ink, Excess Compassion, Male Erotic Net and Suspect Thoughts.
He lives and works with his partner of seven years, Sean Meriwether and Sasha & Nik-Nak their killer Miniature Pinschers – in the West Village of New York.
