Artist Statement for Jaclyn Hamilton
Jaclyn Hamilton often creates her paintings using small machines or “robots” which she has built herself. She constructs her machines using found objects such as motors, feathers, faux fur, and plastic, and often includes them in gallery exhibitions alongside her paintings. These robots assist in creating her colorful abstract works. She uses powdered pigment as a medium for the robots to move around in, spreading and dragging color across the surface of the canvas. The pigment is then sealed using a gloss varnish. While the robots assist in creating the works, Jaclyn is constantly making decisions in the painting regarding color, form, and composition. This collaboration creates a balance between the human hand and random chance.
