Artist Statement for Jacqueline Kudo

It is easy to overlook the variety of life surrounding us. Painting my favorite subjects of animals and landscapes is an invaluable connection to the natural world. Watching or working with animals evokes a sense of wonder about each one’s thoughts, feelings and memories. There is a mystery in these questions. Most have no answer or only partial answers, but they are an important part of my paintings.

What I can sense about animals and nature, I explore in paint. Often this is an intuitive method of layering color and pushing back details to emphasize essential gestures or the most important aspects of the subject. This process develops an atmosphere of colored light relating to the energy of the subject and the space it occupies. My approach to color is influenced by Impressionism, Color Field Painting as well as Matisse and Wolf Kahn. Their work brings me awareness of how color stimulates viewers on a physical level.

Throughout my life, I had the opportunity to know many kinds of animals through riding horses and owning a variety of pets. These animals revealed unique intelligences and characters. I developed a special appreciation for hoses over the ten years I was riding in lessons, exercising lesson horses, and trail riding. This was a chance to see how a working relationship develops between people and other species. I came to realize the horses in their roles of athletes, students and teachers.

After years of depicting animals and landscapes, I now appreciate living beings and nature as strong and fragile, as well as timeless and ephemeral. I keep this in mind as I work on paintings with an aspiration that the artwork is life affirming.
