Artist Statement:
"Romantic post-tec":
Timo-Olavi Jalkanen
deliberately distances himself
from copying the beauty of
nature, instead he transforms
nature images into windows to
his own inner spiritual world.
The spectators are drawn into
the picture space and they can
sense the emotions he
experinced at that moment he
captured the scene. I
described him to be Romantic
artist, Caspar David
Friedrich's counterpart in
contemporary Finland.
"Romantic post-tec, maybe," he
replied. Specifying that his
romantism springs up from the
contrast to the hightec era he
actively lived in for decades
(he worked as a computer and
microprocessor designer, e.g.
in Nokia Corporation). His
need to escape from that
aggressive, technology life,
is now so strong that in his
works man-made objects do not
exist; wooden rowboats being
an exeption. The picture
frames are made of wood
material he collected from
lake at the photo locations.
Broken rowboats, pieces of
oars, and sunken boards of old
jettys have now got a new life
as frames and installations.
All the works are unique,
there are no copies of them.
