Artist Statement for James Schraeder

“Turning seemingly non-plastic elements into a fluid lively piece of art is truly stimulating”

Master jewelry designer, sculptor and visual artist, James has been designing and manufacturing fine jewelry pieces for publicly high profile individuals and select clients of internationally distinguished retail establishments for over 15 years. James began his passion for fine jewelry while a young boy growing up in Alaska. Being the son of a geologist provided James with his instinctual fascination and reaction for unique gems and minerals.

Shortly after finishing his Fine Arts degree in printmaking lithography, from Arizona State University he was employed as an auctioneer with The Fine Arts Gallery of Scottsdale. James’ initial sculpting work was working in art nouveau bronze figures for La Tulip Gallery in Los Angeles. After relocating to New York City, the origin of his jewelry designing development began while working in the wholesale Diamond District on 47th Street.

James’ work embodies a classically European approach with a decidedly modern element. Many of his designs are inspired by the beautiful elements of nature. To imagine the finished piece and then see it born into a three-dimension form inspires his motivation

James also enjoys introducing humorous strokes to his work through reexamining representational forms, bananas, ice cream cones, monkeys, dragons, fish, lizards and giraffes into exquisite sculptural jewelry. His preferred materials are rare and exceptionally fine gem specimens from across the world.

Acknowledging master craftsmen and designers of jewelry from the past he incorporates fine production techniques and engineering of mechanisms.

James is a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America and resides in Manhattan with his wife and two children.
