Artist Statement for James Koskinas
|
|
|
For me the horse is emblematic of man's desire for strength and freedom. My horse paintings are akin to cave paintings in their totemic images. The horse is a vehicle for me, it is a surrogate way of dealing with myself.
The figures come from a long lineage of painting heroes; Van Gogh, Gaugin, Picasso, Modigliani, Kirchner, pioneers all. I add my own uniqueness to this tradition. In each figure I show a history, a psyche of the self, beauty, love and pain. Herein lies the key to my work: balancing these enormous energies.
