Artist Statement for James Young

My paintings are about light and structure. My subject is about conservation. I am drawn to the landscape from a combination of childhood nostalgia and an adult preoccupation with wanting to preserve it. Working in the nativist tradition, I apply my appreciation of my subject matter directly to the formation of my work. This insight allows me to communicate a true version of what I see. My interpretation of the landscape is centralized around an awareness of natural landscape versus that which is man made and created for extraneous reasons.
I prefer a formalist approach to my composition. My background in printmaking also influences my painting style. I consider future elements while adding subsequent layers, so the end results has a feeling of improvisation. I use a fast and loose oil sketch to lay out each painting. This allows me to follow the work where it takes me and not become labored by compositional constraints. I create plein air studies in oil, and watercolor for the purpose of recording structural elements, but my best interpretation happens in the studio, where I consider all of my experiences of a location, and combine them into one painting.
