Artist Statement for Jan Blencowe

I love being outdoors, that's why I paint "en plein air". This is a French phrase and it means "in the open air". So most of my paintings are created outdoors in the midst of the natural world under the sun and sometimes in the rain! Painting on location develops a connection and bond with the land and the animals and plants that make up the amazing diversity of our world. A direct encounter with nature causes one to look deeply and beyond the mere surface of things to their essential components.
