Artist Statement:
Laurence Harcourt "Jay" Wright has spent much of his life channeling the inspiration he derives from art and nature into his own charismatic creations. This approach has been applied to many components of his multifaceted lifestyle, whether delicately sculpting the likeness of an ancient goddess from bronze, or choosing Napa Valley grapes to cultivate a fine wine. For Wright, the exhilaration of interpreting and creating beauty comes from his sensual approach to the artistic process. Although born in Marin County, CA, Wright grew up surrounded by the vibrant and majestic red rock formations of Sedona, AZ, in the presence of a community of talented artists. His first home had been that of Max Ernst, who proved one of the earliest influences on Wright's chosen path.
At age 13, after years immersed in artistic endeavors ranging from sculpture to classical piano and composition, Wright moved with his family to the Napa Valley. There, he spent nearly a decade working in cellars, vineyards, and labs of local wineries. Even today, he keeps a well-stocked cellar at the family ranch in the hills above Calistoga.
