(Amsterdam Whitney brochure)

In a recent solo show (Feb.-Mar. 2006, Kennedy Studio, Marco Island, FL)entitled "Encounter with Nature: Aerated Abstractions," the artist explored a variety of technical treatments and compositional configurations that enhance the expressive quality the oil paintings.

ARTISTS STATEMENT - Philosophically, the artist strives to create an experience of beauty--a positive aesthetic experience in the mind of the viewer. This experience may be perceived on various levels but will be enhanced with continued formal exposure to the artist's work. The notion that beauty is not knowable, or is suspect, is a generational anomaly. As a matter of fact, the striving for beauty is one of the universal qualities in the history of the vusual arts--the artist may not know any of the ancient Mayan languages, for example, but the formal communication is clear and immediate.

There is, in other words, a formal continuum in the visual arts that ebbs and flows in various channels of perception--some formal complexes are exhausted, others continue. One of the conditions of being an "artist," according to Bailey, is to be sensible to this
continuum.

Bailey's work, for the most part, is inspired by observation of unique forms in Nature (especially florae). This "observation" triggers an avalanche of visual associations that may be recorded
in sketches, photographs, actual cuttings from the subject under
observation. From the multitude images pooled in this way, only a few make to the preparatory compositional stage. The compositions are transferred to canvas by a grid-system that enlarges forms from a one to four inch ratio. If, during the first two weeks of painting on the canvas, the images develop in a manner satisfactory to the artist's intention, then the canvas set-up in the studio for further work--if not, the painting is scraped and sanded and prepared for an entirely new composition.

DESCRIPTION OF RECENT PAINTINGS:
The new paintings--Blast Off (48"H X 60" W) and Moon Glow (60" H X 48" W)--divert the viewer to the modalities of outer space. Rouge et Noir unfolds giant red containers on a scultpured black armature. Hall of the Mountain King (48" H X 60" H) and Eternidad (60" H X 96" W) address otherworldly experiences.

Technically, Bailey pushes oil glazing to a new level to achieve the luminosity of tropical colors; her brushstrokes sweep through the forms suggesting subtle breezes or dance movements(Melonberries, Roman Candles, Merengue, Plum Pudding, Avant Garden, Green Tusks).

In Star Brite the viewer is placed inside the bougainvillea bracts and is privy to the feeling of warm, glowing shapes articulated by sunlight outside. The scattered damage caused by the moth larvae, is converted to clumps of glowing stained glass, The viewer has a private showing of the unfolding of a dark spike into a beautiful tiny white flower. Every painterly technique is used to create a beautiful intimate space to see the everyday magic of the
bougainvillea's existence. Green Tusks shares the same type of
intimacy with the viewer.

Roman Candles anid Fourth of July were inspired by the same Tillandsia plant. The latter surges out of a small space (about 1/8") in a mature, imaginary plant. The light floods in behind the stiff petals, which glow like silk. In the mature plant, the tiny spikes adopt the paraphernalia of aged prophets and Navy Lieutenants with a lot of "brass" (yellow petals).
