Artist Statement for Judith Dagostino

I began oil painting in Italy when I was fourteen. I had always drawn and painted with pastels as my preferred pastime as a child but Italy's art penetrated my soul and the beginnings of a yearning to be an artist began to form. I received a BFA degree with Honors in painting and drawing from the University of Hawaii and then went on to receive my MFA in painting at the University of Arizona. I have taught at the University level for many years but my true desire was to just make art. I now paint full time and enjoy the support of several galleries in the United State, Canada and Europe. My work is in many private and corporate collections including the Tucson Airport Authority, American Telelphone & Telegraph, Boston, Massachusetts, Amoco Productions, Denver, Colorado, Robbins Company, New York, NY, Gates Lear Jet, Corporate Offices, Wichita, Kansas, Hilton Hotels, Arizona Hilton East, Tucson, Arizona, Unicore, Springfield, Missouri, Tucson Museum of Art, Tucson, Arizona SUAB, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, Seven-Up Corporation, St. Louis, Missouri
My method of painting landscapes is to work from field sketches that I do plein air mostly for the composition and for the great enjoyment I get from being in the outdoors. From these small studies in the filed, I expand the size of the painting in my studio and work with a color palette that I often imagine or dramatize to create a mysterious and dream like quality.
My method of painting figurative work is to work in a grisaille method. This is an underpainting done in one color and values of that color. Once the composition is complete and dry, I glaze several layers of color to create skin tones, light and shade.
