Artist Statement for Jeanne Fortune

I first became interested in art as a means to escape the drudgery of my school days. As I doodled I made shapes and forms that I imagined, creating my own reality. I became absorbed with pushing the real world away with unexplainable images.
A reoccurring theme I use to make a connection between my inner reality and concrete reality is the human figure - the essence of a contemporary feminine form. The human body is a universal image. I use the human figure as a dialogue or language to express feelings in tones that occur in my personal experiences.
I am fascinated by writing and the way I can communicate very directly to the audience by the use of a few words. Seeing words and having to read them, enables the viewer to acknowledge the existence of the painting by drawing them in. I perceive on a more visual level and feel most comfortable expressing myself with images. But I’m intrigued by the impact of writing and all the implications and connections a limited amount of words can make. The life experiences of writers and visual artists in nurturing a creative spirit are similar.
I invite the viewer to take a closer look by making layers of paint. The images in the painting evolve through the process of painting different images over it several times. I make the first image I start with, slightly visible through various processes - such as experimenting by wiping or scrapping some of the paint and using transparent layers. I also give the painting some dimension with thick layers of paint. I combine the figurative, words and layers with the abstract as a way to give my reality concrete form.
My goal is to draw more interest in the abstract. Not just in the visual sense with abstract shapes and forms, but an abstract reality by juxtaposition of subject matter and emotional tone. By using different subjects and elements I create interconnections that are open to broad interpretations.
My paintings begin with a story that changes and evolves as I continue to work on the process of painting. The painting becomes a life of it’s own. I would like the audience to search for clues that are both personal and universal. To be able to relate somehow to a different, unusual and unknown point of view. To comprehend humanity a little more clearly by taking delight in visualizing abstract possibilities.
