Perception and perspective

'Nothing is what it seems to be.'
Nature is a great source of inspiration in my work. The way a river finds its way into the landscape, tree bark, leaves, insects, the beauty of nature mesmerizes me. I can look at these things for hours. I can get lost in their forms. If only you look thoroughly and long enough, a tree bark becomes a ravine or you can wander in a snails shell. The only thing you have to do is to imagine yourself bigger or smaller compared to the object. By expanding your visual field, you explore the limits of a phenomenon. And then you discover patterns and rhythm in the chaos of colours and unexpected figures.

It all depends on the way you look at it. And that is precisely the main theme in my work. The place of the viewer, the incidence of light, the texture, the many layers of form and colour: they all contribute to the fact that you can observe a work time and again in new ways. I create a game of distances and proportions to intrigue the viewer. I strive for the infinity of perception.

Since the mid-eighties I have been developing my ideas in a variety of media including ink drawings, mixed-media, glass objects and paperrelifs. I work mainly with paper and glass, because these materials have a natural vulnerability, which adds to the enigma of the image. I develop the papers digitally using multiple coloured layers and original designs to create unique papers which I cut, fold and manipulate to create the paperreliefs. Although framed behind glass these images can still be viewed from different angles. The three dimensional one of a kind art pieces change in colour and design as the viewer moves.
