Artist Statement for Jeff Sass

When I thought of the kind of images that I wanted to make, I suppose I drifted to one of my favorite bits of light social commentary. I tried to search for the small things, things that were becoming rare on our landscape. I wanted to show bits of our collective culture that’s on the way out, replaced by the always expanding franchises, chain restaurants and stores. So the robot posed. He became both vacationer and witness, the observer of a dwindling part of what was unique about small town America and the open highway. He was and is the witness to the not yet homogenized or the ruins of what once was. The work you see begins as a photograph, either conventional or a pinhole photo. It is then printed out large, laminated to canvas and painted upon. I believe that this maintains the reality of the image and so it retains its power.
I want to document what’s out there before it isn’t anymore. I feel that this is important because we as a people should not forget what it was like to have ice cream stands shaped like huge cones, or drive in theatres that resembled cities of the future. We shouldn’t forget what it was like to create each town and city from the ground up, each with its own character.
They say that today if you take someone, blindfold them and transport them to a totally different city, they’ll be unable to tell that they’ve made a trip. Through my work, I want to keep the journey alive.
