Artist Statement for Jenea Rewertz

|
The objective of my art is to recreate the natural world that surrounds and forms us. We are increasingly separate from nature, living more and more in a manmade and designed environment. I hope to renew an interest and desire not only to protect, but also appreciate, the natural world.
These prints explore divine landscapes, the beauty within the ordinary. I am not interested in merely recreating a scene, instead I strive to give form to the power and grace of the landscape, so that it may be admired for its uniqueness and be treated with the respect it deserves.
This series landscapes are places I have enjoyed outdoor activities such as rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. I recorded these adventures in my hand made sketchbooks. They are complete with sketches, thoughts, feelings, and include preliminary designs as I work out ideas that I will use in my relief prints. They are perhaps the best tools to trigger my memory accurately and vividly.
Journaling, particularly sketching an object in nature, exposes us to artistic expression and an alternative way of appreciating and enjoying nature. It forces us to slow down, to observe it carefully and to see it as it really is. My journals will also serve as historical documents allowing others to relive my past. In the future my work will depict a different landscape from what others will see.
