Artist Statement:
I consider my work a re-contextualization of the history of ornament through a spirit reminiscent of the modernist era of unprecedented experimentation. The process of invention involves revealing latent geometries, and explores the region between art, science, and nature, while existing in the realm of contemporary abstract painting. With occasional sampling of decorative motifs, my work has been an intuitive journey into the center, both technically and spiritually. Through symmetry I experience a heightened awareness of natural mysteries through the science of beauty. This process has allowed me to survey many periods, like a time traveler surfing the epochs of visual history.
I’ve recently had the chance to work in a laboratory setting, where I did experimental labs on the principles of Cymatics, the study of shapes and patterns created by mechanical sound vibrations. The physical demonstrations led me to conducting virtual labs via the computer that served as models for the series of paintings I call the “Greytones”. During my study, I was also heavily influenced by the “Googie” era, outlandish Mid-Century Modern design, and the otherworldly architecture of John Lautner....
