Artist Statement:
For me painting is the visual
equivalent of the evocative
language in poetry, in which
brief flashes of description
and condensed narrative draw
the reader through rapid
shifts in location and time,
effecting emotional
transformations through the
journey.
The notion of the realm of
nature holding the spiritual

Why Did You Become An Artist My mother was a painter and my father was an actor so I grew up in an extremely creative environment. My two brothers and I were actually allowed to draw on the walls! I thought everyone did art when I was small until I started grade school at a private preparatory school, and learned otherwise. I couldn't stop making things and drawing at that school ( my memory only recalls the art classroom) so, after 4th grade I was put into an art school. Then after high school with high intent I tried NOT to be an artist (to avoid the struggles) and started my young life in fashion design so I could get a job. I did quite well actually, but was very miserable creatively. So I went back to art school and the rest is history.

Your Personal Biography As a child I spent the summers roaming a rural island on the Atlantic coast of the United States. I spent my days in the swamps, woods, beaches, and ocean examining bugs, plants, shells, rocks; everything in my path as I walked the Island and its fascinating woods and beaches.
As an adult this journey endures through the creation of my own garden and in continuing my forays and hikes through the countryside. These provide me a vast and unending supply of visual material and inspiration. In my experience, a place is digested in small parts or observations so that while I am working in the garden a collective experience is pieced together through observing minute details. Things are perceived broadly and then up close almost simultaneously. By focusing attention in the round each moment is captured in the mind, like photos taken in rapid succession. I might recognize the energy from the flight of small birds around me, light reflecting off flower petals, or water on leaves, and interpret this as one experience in observation.
