Artist Statement for Jennifer Bain

For me painting is the visual equivalent of the evocative language in poetry, in which brief flashes of description and condensed narrative draw the reader through rapid shifts in location and time, effecting emotional transformations through the journey.
The notion of the realm of nature holding the spiritual was introduced to me at the Rudolph Steiner School I attended as a child. The philosophy taught there called Anthroposophy maintained that “material science could never comprehend the whole of nature as it excluded the realm of the spirit. Bridging between the physical and spiritual worlds, anthroposophy would show the way towards a true understanding of humanity and it’s relation to the universe.”
The Steiner philosophy also incorporated the idea of education through the arts. This early emphasis on the spiritual has led me to explore painting as my life’s practice and transformation through art making.

The paintings link pieces of information in clearly defined “film strip” like sections horizontal or vertically aligned, or in layered imagery that builds information on an open visual field. The difference is spatial but the information is similarly related.
I employ free hand drawing (through wet paint) for a sharp line quality rendered pictorially or as gestures and movement. Along with this I add painterly blurred images, as well as more sharply rendered images in focus. These different approaches and techniques are employed to evoke a sense of time, memory, and the precision of accurate observation all correlating to different levels of awareness, as well as the fragmented nature of perception.
I use intuition when choosing images and try to allow something to happen without thinking about limits; to attempt to transcend the limitation of ideas and preconceptions, and to trust spontaneous connections to arise in the imagery.
