Artist Statement:
The following artist statement only pertains to my collage work:
My interest in collage began in 2001, when I saw a piece by a fellow classmate in Art college. His piece had a complexity that interested me intellectually while also challenging my aesthetic. I began to experiment with mixed media, (up to this point I had only painted in oil, and acrylic) primarily gel mediums and acetate, to create layering with my imagery. The more I experimented with this layering process, I found the media to lend itself to ambiguous subject matter. Being a student of various communications, I began to integrate text into my pieces. I also included rendered drawings, line drawings, clippings, cutouts, photographs, or anything that I found visually powerful. My first attempts were paper collages produced in my sketchbook. As I created dozens of these assemblages, I narrowed down to one piece which I transferred to a medium scale painting. Each piece that followed was an experiment with the media and subject matter.
I believe my interest in collage stems from my desire to combine drawing and painting in a unique way. Both mediums have interest to me. The controlled line and formality of drawing, verses ...
