Artist Statement:
I hunt and gather: in my mother’s basement storage of lace curtains, eBay for weathered fabrics or old wood type, old books and magazines for words or phrases or images that strike meaning or discord. I find these things and often feel a connection but may not be initially sure what to do with them. Will this yellow tea colored book fit in with my monoprint Travellar series? This lace squirreled away by my mother has a lovely texture but is it appropriate for the large woodcuts? The act of finding, saving and incorporating these objects into prints makes them precious. I have been working on a series of large woodcut monoprints for several years now, incorporating these found texts and textures. The textural elements of found fabric materials are inspired by my grandmother's use of found fabrics for quilting and by my mother's obsession with lace curtains, doilies and table runners. Additionally, the figurative imagery represents women's hands (my hands, my mother's hand...) and the acts of welcoming, compassion and nurturing that is expressed through different hand gestures.
