Artist Statement:
Latent Potential of Discarded Things
Seedpods. They are the wrinkled brown fruit of flowers. Though devoid of soft-petaled beauty, they carry the seeds of fruitfulness. I am using these seed pods as a symbol for things, people, and places that no longer have their first-bloom rosiness, but, when seen in the right light, are still powerful and have the potential to bear much fruit. This body of work consists of eleven Van Dyke prints of seedpods.
I chose a process and subject matter to give a message of hope. The seedpods represent the past in that they are from a tree that we no longer see. They also represent the present because that’s what they are now. And they represent the future, because they hold the seeds inside them of what will become. The photographic process also represents the past in that it is resurrected from the past to show something in the present in order to talk about the future. These small seed pods are magnified many times life size in order to bring attention to something that we often overlook. The dramatic lighting makes the seedpods appear as if they are emerging from the dark...
