Artist Statement for Jesse Kellman

“Art to me is a form of therapy, a way to revisit past experiences and an opportunity to examine triumph and failure. My palette is my mind and my creations are mere glimpses into a life a little less ordinary”.
Jesse Kellman.

Neo-Expressionism painting is a vehicle which lets me express my creative endeavors. My journey through life has awarded me a bounty of images, emotions and memories from which to choose. I approach my work much as I do life, head on, aggressively and straight forward. There is a deep personal element in my work. The subject matter typically is an emotional reconnection I have with a specific memory or experience. Typically, my work deals with family, love/ loss, emotions, adoption and the human life experience. These themes tend to resonate with viewers allowing them to attach themselves to my work based on similar experiences they have had. After all, who hasn’t had a broken heart or been pressured by the robotic, sand paper like reality of our world. But most importantly I relay the human experience. I paint a life. I paint pages from a story crying to be told. My work examines human drama, life’s craziness and the effect on the human psyche.

My pieces are typically large scale. Big, bold brush strokes, heavy textural elements, sheens and color all join together to create the image. My color selection and amounts range. I prefer to ease into color and allow the various ingredients of the paintings to works as a whole. Essentially lots of smaller elements joined as one to create a powerful image. I use recycled paints and environmentally friendly materials to ensure a message of consciousness. When applicable I employ trash and found objects to highlight a sense of the human existence. Art is the world around it.

My goal as an artist is to capture the human experience, to identify emotion and thought and to bring it to an audience. My goal as an artist is to entertain the viewer by creating an image that questions its source, questions reality and questions experiences common to us all. I desire to continue on this path in my artistic endeavors. I wish to investigate further the ever changing world in which we live.
