Artist Statement:
MY JOURNEY TOWARDS SELF EXPRESSION AND ABSTRACTION.
I am searching for a way to express myself through art, trying to develop a way of working as an individual which is essentially my own way of seeing and doing. I enjoy drawing and painting the human figure, and have been striving for a way to freshen this classical form of expression.
To this end I have studied the work of many artists including Schiele and Klimt. By experimenting with the figure and a combination of media and techniques I hope to express the human condition and its interaction with the environment. I aim to push the boundaries of the portrait and life studies using abstraction to add movement, drama and life to a static pose. The figure in the landscape, or as landscape is also a re-occuring theme in my work, as is the enjoyment of the abstract sculptural qualities found in nature.
I like to go with the flow, exploiting the happy accident, developing and modifying ideas as I work. My colour palette can often be arbitrary, with dramatic colour being used to express mood and atmosphere....

Best Marks for portraiture must go to Jill Moynan with Kerry (mixed media), Kathleen (acrylic) and Monday's model (acrylic). All powerful and characterful pieces, with interesting backgrounds too.

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
I have been influenced by many artists. In particular, Egon Schiele and Gustaf Klimt, from whom I learned about using the figure as a motif for life, expressing the emotional state as well as the inner self. From Frantisek Kupka I discovered that colour can be completely arbitrary, and that you do not have to limit yourself to one style of working. Christine Comyn with her magical backgrounds and atmospheric figures has inspired me. She convinced me that you can represent the emotions of life with an abstraction. Every nuance does not have to be spelled out. |

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
As a child all I wanted to do was paint and draw. As an adult I still felt the same and a career in graphic design allowed me to be creative and earn a living. I still feel the same need to paint and draw, and take a childlike joy in expressing myself through art. |

| Your Personal Biography |
JILL MOYNAN.
I was born and educated in the North East of England and moved to Huddersfield in 1969. In 1983 I returned to education at Huddersfield University, where I studied graphic design and then went on to have a successful career as a designer.
After retirement I have returned to my first love, painting and drawing, and am enjoying the freedom to experiment using a mixture of media and methods. I have attended life drawing sessions and rekindled my passion for the human form. The last few years has been an exciting journey of discovery and search for my own identity as an artist.
My approach to work is bold. I know what I want to achieve and just go for it. I am not averse to going with the flow, changing direction or using the occasional happy accident. Not all experiments are successful, but much is learned in the process. I hope that you enjoy these pieces as much as I have enjoyed making them. |
