Artist Statement:
My love for animals and nature started when I was very young. We had a lot of cats and dogs while I was growing up and I was amazed by their grace and beauty. Insects also fascinated me and I was constantly pulling up bricks in the sidewalk to find bugs. And, like most boys, I was very curious about how things worked. Much to my mother’s dismay, I loved to dismantle her household appliances to find out what was happening in there.
I think my curiosity about how various pieces and parts form something functional and my love for nature finally collided in my art. My art instructor in high school was my mentor in sculpture. His work was very abstract and he encouraged me to see things from a different perspective. During college I pushed myself to find new inspiration and discover my own creative style. I found jobs where I learned welding techniques and I discovered that I really liked the challenge of putting together recycled materials and found objects in entirely new ways to create new functions and meanings.
