Artist Statement for Jaiymie Kiggins

My love for animals and nature started when I was very young. We had a lot of cats and dogs while I was growing up and I was amazed by their grace and beauty. Insects also fascinated me and I was constantly pulling up bricks in the sidewalk to find bugs. And, like most boys, I was very curious about how things worked. Much to my mother’s dismay, I loved to dismantle her household appliances to find out what was happening in there.
I think my curiosity about how various pieces and parts form something functional and my love for nature finally collided in my art. My art instructor in high school was my mentor in sculpture. His work was very abstract and he encouraged me to see things from a different perspective. During college I pushed myself to find new inspiration and discover my own creative style. I found jobs where I learned welding techniques and I discovered that I really liked the challenge of putting together recycled materials and found objects in entirely new ways to create new functions and meanings.
Sometimes just observing nature brings an idea. Sometimes a piece of metal or scrap resource will inspire me to create a particular creature. The idea is actually the hard part, the execution of it just takes time. And when it goes well, and every piece seems to just slip into it’s new role like it was always meant to be there, well that’s really the fun part.
While I was in college I decided to focus on endangered species. Much of work I choose to create is influenced by a species’ status on the endangered or threatened lists. With the insect series particularly—it’s amazing how many insects are endangered! Too few people realize insects’ vital role in keeping an ecosystem humming along. I hope that by creating art that’s accessible and functional, I can bring awareness to people about the importance of larger issues such as recycling and biodiversity and help us all gain a greater respect for the creatures with which we share our Earth.
I donate 10 percent of the purchase price of each endangered species piece to a conservation fund of the buyer’s choice.
