Artist Statement for Jasminka Kukic

Symbols allow us to grasp a connection that eludes the mind, because only one of the two associated parts is known. Our consciousness reaches the boundaries of the unconscious and can only indirectly, through symbols, arrive at its hidden nature. A symbol is a primitive expression and the highest intuition. Using symbols as bridges to enter the realm of the unconscious, we expand the field of consciousness.

If we accept that the depth of the human soul and spirit are unfathomable, except psycho-analysts, only artists, philosophers and theologians can undertake the voyage into its unknown and unusual layers. The journey itself holds somewhat of an adventure and a challenge, that terrible itch of the unknown that drives us to do crazy things…

Working on collages, exploring myriads of images and their combinations, I strive to discover symbols that go beyond the visible: potent signs that express the elusive search for the truth, the joy, the sacred and hidden meaning of everything that exists on this magical and awesome planet.

Signs we leave behind will not escape the fate of all that is mortal – they will disappear and be forgotten. Even if these weak and incoherent marks fail to save us from wondering and temptations, they help us by showing that others have been here and that we are neither the first nor unique. A direct or hidden confession through symbolic images interrupts the growth and weakens the internal forces by launching them into the surrounding world. It is a rescuing diminishment.
