Artist Statement for Jocelyn Mcauley

Inner Process
The pursuit of my Biology degree initiated my conscious exposure to many intricate and inspiring sets of patterns and color combinations found in unassuming places. My insect collecting took me away from the indoor world of research to romping in the fields along riverbanks. The insects I collected revealed an amazing array of glittering surfaces and complex color combinations that reclassified these creatures to a new realm of tiny crawling art. Elaborate patterns and combinations of color continue to reveal themselves to me in my daily life assisting in the running of a research laboratory. My glimpses through microscopes have continued to reveal stunning patterns and complexes from tight ordered matrices of cells to soft gradients of diffused protein expression. The colors, patterns, and textures revealed to me through my investigations of the science of developmental processes swirl in my thoughts. Only recently have I begun to realize that these fascinations have found their way out in my artistic expressions.

I have recently expanded my portfolio of artwork to include my new direction of experimental paintings that harkens to the exciting colors of insects and patterns found in the developmental schemes of nature. The technique I employ in these works involves hand mixing plastic resin and incorporating special blends of pigments that give the impression of scintillating floating liquid pools. The resulting shimmering surfaces have opened up an opportunity for me to explore art as a form of color play that portrays the fundamental forming processes found in nature.
