Artist Statement for Joan Fabian

Capturing images, motifs and icons of cultures, both east and west, I formulate paintings, collages, hybrid drawings and scribble recordings as investigations of my surroundings and cultures present, whether at home or abroad. My work borders on a raw sensibility that transcends current contemporary art cliches to include social issues of media influences and psychological hierarchies. I challenge ideals of beauty and the voyeuristic desire behind the act of seeing by my combinations of surrealistic abstractions; attempting to bring a self-consciousness to the prestigious power structures in human tastes.
While living and working in Pakistan for a period of time, I became over-stimulated by the movement and activity in the streets and my "mental baggage" of being a Westerner. The seduction of colorful textiles being sold next to human poverty in the bazaars gave made me aware of the primitive act of seeing and the assumptions quickly made regarding what we see. I dare to break down preconceived ideas about cultures and visual knowledge. I try to take the viewer out of the everyday realm of "what appears" in hopes of giving a new perspective that instead allows for calm questioning. My deep appreciation for Sufi poetry and the writings of Sufi scholars in addition to the study of belief-systems, has fueled this investigation of looking at existence differently and from many angles and layers with an awareness of the workings of the human mind.
