BIOGRAPHY
Sydney born artist Joanne Handley has long held an interest in the relationships between art, science and new technology. She works across media - painting, sculpture, print and digital media - employing an array of natural and synthetic materials from mica flakes and linen to stainless steel filings, cast acrylic and 'hotmetal'.
Handley’s current work explores the perceptual and cultural dynamics of liminality. Questioning the nature of boundaries and how this perception determines our understanding of what lies ‘between’, she is interested in the internal dialogue, the process of inquiry itself; transitions; liminal spaces where ideas or concepts (be they cultural, political or artistic) are in constant states of dissolution, negotiation and change.
Her large scale mixed media pieces merge bioindustrial forms, sequence and cross-cultural references that signal implicit memories of, and immersion in, cultures other than her own - particularly India, France, the Middle East and South East Asia. From late 1998-2003, she lived and worked in the United States during which time she undertook MFA research investigating the synthesis of painting, digital image and giclée print.
