Artist Statement for Joel P Heinz Sr.
Aloha, I am Joel P Heinz Sr. I was born in Minnesota, raised and educated in California, served in the Army in Viet Nam, had a career and raised a family in California, and now live my dream in Maui with my wife Kathy.
In 1995, I began painting acrylic on canvas with no formal art training. All of my art education has come from associating with other artists and the joy of experimenting and discovery. At first, my favorite subject was Tropical Marine. I dabbled in Egyptian art for a short time to work in detail, a noticeable characteristic of most of my artwork on canvas.
During 21 years prior to moving to Maui, I gained an appreciation for the Hawaiian culture and its primitive art. This led to subject-matter changes in my canvas paintings. I was intrigued by the geometric designs on tattoos and on Hawaiian Kapa and by ancient Hawaiian petroglyph rock carvings. I began to combine these two cultural icons in my paintings and even took artist's license to create a few of my own petroglyph designs. Recent acquisition of Tapa Cloth led to a painting frenzy that has gone on for three years. I am still enjoying it today, and my brush has not touched canvas since.
After much encouragement from friends, I began sculpting some of my favorite petroglyphs in Koa. I have also been carving in lava rock, blue rock, tumbled marble, and even fiberglass.
I hope you enjoy my artwork as much as I enjoy creating it.
