Artist Statement for Joel P Heinz Sr.
Joel P. Heinz, Sr., has been painting acrylic on canvas since 1995. All of his art training has come from associating with other artists and the joy of experimenting and discovery. “My favorite subject is Tropical Marine; I love it so. When I paint the sea and all the delightful things therein, it brings me peace; then, everything else falls into place.”
In recent years, living in Maui, Joel has gained a greater appreciation for the Hawaiian culture both past and present. This has resulted in subject-matter changes in recent expressions on canvas. He is particularly intrigued by ancient designs on Tapa (also known as Kapa) and petroglyph rock carvings. For this reason he began to combine these two cultural icons into his paintings and has even taken artist's license to create a few of his own petroglyph designs.
After much encouragement from friends and acquaintances in the art field, he has undertaken the art of sculpting some of his favorite Hawaiian petroglyphs. Since KOA wood is treasured in Hawaii, he has selected this wonderful hard wood as his medium of choice.
