Artist Statement:
Joanna Goddard was born in Brighton, Sussex, in 1969, where she lives and works. She has exhibited regularly in Britain and abroad since 1993. After graduation she worked to commission making tableware & transfer printed tiles, but in 1999 took a change of direction and looked to microbiology, inflatable toys & "organic style" Japanese architecture for inspiration. Since 2000 she has made abstract works - including the Population Series.
In 2002 she was funded by her Regional Arts Board to develop new artwork - The Germinator, which is now installed in business premises in Brighton. Joanna prefers to draw and contemplate her works before touching any clay. For her, making a new piece of work is like a courtship - a kind of ritual. Joanna has a workshop and is assisted by her father, an excellent technician.
Joanna has recently returned from a trip to Japan; this was a combined research and promotional trip. She was visiting commercial galleries in Kyoto and Tokyo as well as taking trips to natural hot springs and volcanic features for inspiration....
