John Manzi - Color Focus
When I first discovered John Manzi's astonishing photography, I assessed that one of the more admirable and possibly most important aspects of his work is a very classic concept: An artist an his camera. And though classic and concept practically illustrate "oxymoron" in the contemporary art world, I think here it is appropiate. When studying his lush, color-saturated work one may initially question John's technique, assuming computer enhancement or digital production. Neither is true. And though I think Manzi may perceive his camera as a metaphorical paintbrush, this is photography: using camera, lens, shutter and light, etc., capturing abstract compositions found within objects in nature. John Manzi creates imagery that redefines the term "in focus". He is interpreting a reality we are all familiar with and re-focussing our eye to a vision of his own making: A world enormously beautiful and emotioinal.
When discussing modern art, critics and admirers alike commonly ask: "how was it done?" or "What is it?". Both questions I abhor. Simply stated, brilliantly developed, Mr John Manzi took his camera, focused on and captured beauty.
