INLAND SEAS AND MYTHICAL TRAVELERS an exhibit of highly detailed work by local clay artists Joanne Taylor Brown and Peter Quinn will be a study in contrast between hand-built forms and wheel-thrown construction.

Joanne Taylor Brown’s current work explores pristine land and seascapes. These sculptural forms seem to come from a time before humans. When water was pure and the land untethered by man. These forms are landscapes portraying a deep blue lake in a high mountain plateau or an emerald green lake in a desert oasis. The sculptural land and seascapes are a contrast of earth tones and vibrant greens and blues. These pieces are intricate and complex in their construction, but have a calming simplicity that takes the viewer to land and seascapes so pure they seem real.

Peter Quinn’s Chariot Teapots and Arks are archetypal in the sense that the basic wooden boat and horse-drawn cart are represented in all societies. Any commonality ends there. These chariots and arks become objects of pure fantasy, truly mythical travelers. Borrowing freely from the ages, a chariot may have the wheels of a low rider, carved and chromed. The lid may be a Byzantine onion dome or a spiked mast from the middle ages. These arks pull the ocean floor up and put it on the deck. Puffer fish become vessels containing treasure and beautiful porcelain birds sit in elaborately carved Victorian cages. These works take the viewer on a dance through history.
