Artist Statement for Joanne Taylor Brown

|
The moss made a cobblestone like pattern near the path. There was a tree turned on its side with a twisted motion about it. The seaweed danced in the water. The radio announcer expressed vivid scenes of Baghdad being bombed. My pieces grow from these objects and visions around me. I do not try to recreate these images but rather use them as a starting point for my own work.
Inspired by texture and pattern in nature I will take a slab of clay and texture it. Then I attempt to push it to its limit. The movement of the clay and the ways in which the pattern can be pushed and altered drives me. When I step away from a piece and see the character it has taken on I see how and earlier impression was ultimately reflected in my creation.
