Artist Statement for Jonathan Knapp

Whilst studying for a (BA) Hons degree in Fine Art at London Guildhall University, I became a fan of artistic approaches that involved the simplification and stripping down of compositions and forms to their fundamental properties to provide a geometric network of shapes that combined would create a whole coherent shape. Along with feeling an affiliation with movements including Pop Art, Futurism and Cubism, artists such as Prampolini, De Lempicka, Braque, Lichenstein, Freud and Picasso are all artists I consider a great influence in my style.
My am also very interested in Pop Art both as an expression socially and also artistically, both in terms of its brash attitude towards it’s subject, and it’s lack of fear to be a strong presence visually.
I feel my paintings are a bi-product of all of these approaches, a subconscious attempt to produce a vibrant composition through the combination of deconstructed forms with dynamic colour. I feel I have an ever-evolving style and would consider painting without being exploratory of other techniques and styles to be a failing as a developing painter.
I have recently exhibited my work in a gallery space in Islington, London (Microzine, March 2004).
