Artist Statement for Jose Soromenho

José Soromenho was born in 1950 in the Portuguese coastal town of Setúbal, where he graduated from High School in 1969. One year later, he started serving in Guiné-Bissau as a Sergeant in the Portuguese Army, returning to Portugal during its post revolutionary period to work as a technician in the major Portuguese shipyard. In 1982, the call for adventure and personal freedom took him, as a naval technician freelancer, to experience the cultures of such different places as Varna and Burgas in Bulgaria; Galicia, Asturias and Pais-Vasco in Spain; the Atlantic islands of Terceira in Azores and Sal, Santo Antão and São Vincente in Cape-Verde; Macau, Hong Kong, ShangHai, BoHai and Dalian in China; Ulsan in South Korea; and Timor Lorosae, where he stayed for one year as a United Nations engineer. The common presence of boats and water in all this different places will be determinant in establishing the subject of his future work as an artist, and in 1999 he returns to his hometown and starts working as a sculptor in the attic of his house. Materials found in shipyards and along the Portuguese coast, as well as the ship-construction-like techniques make him feel as a patron of Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich during the First World War.
