Artist Statement:
Joyce Meck, 1969 graduate of
the Art Institute of
Pittsburgh, has been a
commercial graphic designer
since before computers, and
has been painting watercolor
for only the last six years.
She is a realist interested in
flowers, landscapes,
seascapes, wildlife, and
birds.
"I have heard that learning to
paint is a three stage
process: First, one learns the
basics, drawing well, light
and shadow, depth, and of
course, becoming familiar with
materials. Second, learn the
techniques, experiment - 'what
happens if I do this...' And
finally, becoming your own
artist - Style. But I think
that learning will never end,
thankfully. I beleive that I
have begun my 'style' but who
knows? The most enjoyment is
in the surprise I get with
every painting. I don't make
all the decisions before
laying color to paper. I like
to let some of it just happen.
The composition, the use of
the negative space (which is
as important as the positive
space) compatibility of
colors, depth, light and
shadow, and the focal point
are decisions that must be
made first, but the rest is
just plain fun!"

pallet, and with many glazing
layers, her colors remain
